Smile Comet Repair

Hi, unsure if there is really a section for this but here goes.

Bought a Laptop from Comet a while ago and bought the 3 years accidental damage cover aswell. Last month the Hard Drive broke, and I'd been having a bit of trouble with the screen, so I took it back to Comet (As the 12-month warranty with Acer had expired) and they told me they'd repair it.

2-3 weeks later I got a letter from the woman at the service centre saying the laptop had suffered liquid contamination, and that if the repair work is the continue I would need to give a reason as to how liquid managed to get its way inside the laptop - or the insurance company will not pay out to repair the damage.

My problem is, I have no idea how any liquid got in there. Whenever the laptop was not with me is was locked away, theres just no oppertunity for liquid to contaminate my laptop, I can't explain it.

The Comet advisor said I should consider lying, since thats the only way he can see any progress being made. However if I say I spilled water on the keyboard when the liquid contamination is on the screen... They'll know I'm making it up. I just don't want to lie, I'm bad at it.

I've been on the phone to comet also for, well, hours. I kept getting passed around and around all these different centres and nobody could tell me any different, just passed me on the someone else. I ended up speaking to the very same guy in Northern Ireland three times.

I'm kinda at a brick wall here,
What do I do??

Thank you,
Tom.

Hello,now I would completely lie.

Comet,s service is the same as PC World/Curry,s.

Get back on the phone and email the complaints as telephone calls mean nothing to them.Tell them the only way liquid could come into contact with the laptop would be either at there store were you returned it or at there repair center.

That if you had spilt liquid in there you would of experienced problems way before now.Be firm do not shout I would be on the phone and emailing them every day.

Tell them to test the laptop to see if its tea/coffee or water. Then tell them you never drink tea or coffee for one.You will have to lie or you are stuck.Tell them you want to speak to a higher staff member NOW and you want this sorted blame there staff some one must of done this not you.

Before phoning them back think of a good story and practice it.Tell them before you returned it you had it checked out by another repair shop and the laptop never left your sight while the guy checked it out. That the repair guy never opened the laptop up at all as this can void your warranty.

They just trying to get out of fixing it.

Me I would lie till I am blue in the face.LOL.

Grrr Comet are really bad for repairs. My phone power button stopped working a while ago and was becoming unresponsive. I took it back to Comet and they sent it off, the comet support guy assessed it and sent it off. It came back month or so later and they said they are not going to repair it or provide a replacement because it was intentionally damaged, they pulled it out the packet and the power button had been completely damaged - cracked in half. It was fine before we sent it off but they would not believe us, it took a few days before we managed to convince them. We found the guy that sent it off and got him to tell his managers and other staff that it was fine when sent off, then they finally gave us a refund, without saying sorry!

Ask them to prove it as I did. I could not believe I had damaged my phone as it was fine. Maybe they slipped when working on it and their coffee went all over it before the got to working on the original problem....wouldn't surprise me.

Thanks for the replies.

It's not actually Comet refusing to repair it, but obviously they're not gonna do it for free. The insurance company who will pay the costs of any repair won't pay out until I tell them what has happened. But nothing has happened.... Hmmn.

If I DO tell the insurance company I spilled water on it, for example, that will be against my name, as such. Meaning if I do get my laptop back from them sometime in the next 2 years then I actually do spill water on it, the person processing the claim will think its a bit of a coincidence, and i'll look like im just doing it for the new laptop.

I've emailed and emailed and rang and rang. I went into the store today and the guys in my local store are normally really helpful, but as they said they can't do anything, because the insurer won't pay.

I'm half tempted to ask for the laptop back and then accidentally spill say, the contents of a swimming pool on it. That way I'd get a brand new laptop. But i'm a **** liar so I can't do that. lol.

It's a bit of a joke really, I'm in 6th form, its right at the very end of the School Year, I have so much coursework to do and I need the laptop.... The laptop just needed a new hard drive, which was gonna take "14 Days", over a month on they still have it. ugh!
