I went down to Comet this morning to start demanding. I had the intention of saying "Look, the laptop is damaged in your care, not mine, so its up to Comet to fix it, If I don't have it back in 14 days I'll contact Trading standards"

However the girl there was kinda hot so it didn't quite go as planned.

I got given a phone number to call for the actual service centre where my laptop is, they then gave me the number of a new department to call instead of them... It turns out they gave me a number which I had already range before, so effectively I just went around in a big cricle.

However this time the woman on the phone gave me the address of the insurance company and said I may aswell write them a letter since it's them that's causing the problem.

I sent them a letter today:

Dear Sir/Madam,

My laptop is currently in a Comet repair centre awaiting the repair of a faulty hard drive and LCD display, to be funded by the insurance cover provided by you.

On the 8th of May 2008 I received a letter from the Comet centre claiming that the unit has suffered “Liquid Contamination”, although when the unit was being diagnosed in-store no evidence of this was found.

My problem is, whilst in my care the unit has not suffered any liquid contamination, and when not in my care the unit has always been locked away. There was no opportunity for the unit to be liquid damaged in my care.

I do understand that if I had spilled a liquid over the laptop I would still be fully insured, as my insurance policy covers accidental damage, however I simply cannot explain how and liquids came into contact with the unit. Several Comet advisors suggested that I lied to you, the insurance company, by stating that I had accidentally spilled a liquid such as water over the laptop, to speed up the process of the repair, but I do not see this as a fair way to go about things.

Comet have therefore requested that the insurance claim should be processed as “Unknown Cause of Damage”, and they said that this would require me getting into contact with you in writing. I have some various reference numbers which may help you assist me further:
And I'm eagerly expecting nothing to happen...

Hmmm. Well Good Luck If you get no outcome maybe try filing a complaint to the relevant company, complaints tend to get looked at more quickly and dealt with.

In case anyone is interested, It appears my letter worked.

I received a post-card style letter directly from Comet today saying that my laptop is now undergoing repair, yet awaiting parts, and that it should be ready for collection on the 1st of June.

It was originally going to take 14 days, but if their latest prediction is correct it will take/have taken 45 days.... Oh well, thats Comet.

Cheers for the help.

I went in for the laptop today, and to my surprise it was actually there, ready.

They have done a good job with it, feels like a new laptop again.

Before they had it, it had an 80GB hdd, they've replaced it with 100gb... No complaints here.

They've fit a new LCD display which looks a lot better than the older one (Though it might just be because it is new?)

I looked at the report that came with it and it says that the liquid spilled on it was "Sticky" and "possibly pop". But I don't see how pop could ever have been spilled on it. Oh well.

Anyway, happy.

Thanks.

Great news. Glad you got it all sorted out now

The screen may be a different type of panel, probably depending on the stock they had.
