Unhappy My Compaq won't start right.

I got a nice Compaq Presario 5000 recently and have used it constantly. Just today it started oddly: First it looked as it was starting up right until when the Compaq logo was supposed to appear, which it didn't. Second, the HD LED was on for a minute and suddenly turns off. Third, after that, nothing happens. Help me please!!! I am about to burst into tears due to the HD having Civil War pics!!!

No, it doesn't make any beep codes and last time it worked it didn't show any error messages before shutting down.
