Betty could also try turning off laptop and turn power off to modem,wait 1 minute then power modem on first then the laptop as this may pick up the connection.Make sure modem is connected to the laptop in question while you do this.

Please could you also look in device manger.
click on start scroll to my computer and right click on my computer and scroll to properties
Open properties then go to hardware tab click on it
click on the button that says device manger and look at network adaptors and see if there are any symbols in yellow.
or look to see if there is listed there other devices and see what is listed there.

However if you turn off laptop and modem and then reboot modem and then laptop this may fix the issue.
