Default Random Restarts

I purchased my computer about 1 year ago and use it primarily for gaming. It's custom built (components chosen by myself) and was put together by a friend who does it as his second job.

Throughout the year I've had issues with the computer randomly restarting - it wasn't until recently when my power supply (Ultra 550w X2 Power Supply / 120mm / Titanium) died that I truly noticed the problem for what it was and potentially could become.

Most of the time it would restart itself while it was idling and I was away from the computer. Eventually I found that I could make this restart occur by attempting to Alt+Tab out of basically any Valve game (Counter Strike 1.6, Source, Half-Life 2, etc.) and that it would NOT occur when Alt+Tabbing out of World of Warcraft.

I've been told that it may be my RAM causing this problem. I've done the online RAM tests and they have all come back saying it's fine so I'm at a loss as to how to correct this issue.

Any help that anyone can provide would be wonderful! Thank you!

Welcome to PCHF lhumen,

Have you bought a new PS yet? or are you still running the same one? Where i work most of our random restarts happen due to failing Power supplies.

The power supply was under warranty so I have the same model of power supply in my computer. It is up and going at the moment. But it's been doing the "same old thing" with the new replacement as well.

I was originally hoping that it was the old power supply's fault for the restarts. But it looks as though that wasn't the problem.

Thanks for the reply,

So there is a new PS in the system. and you've run RAM test to discard your Memory problem. have you ran any test on your Video card?

Random restarts happen to me when playing wow. it got to the point where i couldn't figure it out and i came to this site. my solution was buying a new Board because mine had a bad vga port on it.

Thank you for the quick response to my post - I really appreciate it.

When I first got my computer up and going I know the person who put it together ran 3D Benchmark. Other then that no other programs that I've run.

Is there a test program that you would suggest?

I was looking through other posts from people having similar random restart problems.

One post made mention of how to obtain the "blue screen of death" and thus diagnostics relating to the crash.

Here are the three major looking things that were shown on said screen:

PFN_LIST_CORRUPT

*** STOP: 0x0000004E (0x0000008F, 0xFFFFFFED, 0x00063A8E, 0x00000000)

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.

I hope this helps. Thank you again.
