Hey Budley,
Let's say for a moment that the BIOS update was a fluke, and it just happened to show 2gig that one time. I only say this because ASUS (the manufactuerer of your motherboard) have never released any BIOS updates that directly affect
RAM, nor would both HP and ASUS ship their products with this kind of obvious and hard to miss fault to thousands, most likely millions of it's customers.
If your
RAM is only showing 1gig, than the most likely problem is either that the memory is faulty, or it's not correctly seated in it's slot. The first thing I would try budley is to reseat both chips, which is very easy to do. Open up your PC and find you
RAM slots. There are two plastic holders either side of the slot, which you pull in the direction away from the
RAM to release. Then slot them back in again until they click back into place.
If that fails, try one chip at a time. If one of the chips is faulty, it won't start, and will beep at you instead (no
ram to boot with). At this point, if it's a new PC, contact HP and ask for a replacment.
