Default New RAM upgrade, need advice asap!

Hey all!!.

As you probably know (ive been bragging about it lately) i have 2gb of ballistix DDR2-PC28000.....which is 1000mhz in speed....(as far as i know, correct me if i'm wrong).

BUT, i read a while ago that my motherboard can only support max 800mhz speed ram...i have the ASUS Commando motherboard.....

Now, i plan to sell this ram, and buy DDR2 PC2-6400 ram, which runs at 800mhz (again, correct me if i'm wrong)....i just wanted to know if it was worth it?, should i stick with my 1000mhz ram??, can my current mobo be changed or modified/overclocked to take advantage of this extra 200mhz at all or not?. I really need to know quickly to take advantage of a generous friends offer on some ballistix ddr2 6400 ram.....

Thanks for the help, greatly appreciate it!.

If it boots/runs/plays games/without issue-- I'd leave it-- you can't hurt anything by using too high a speed-- as long as it is of a compatible type...the faster RAM will not run any faster than the FSB allows.
You already own it... why spend if you don't have to?

Overclocking might work but why beat on your other components-- which were obviously not cheap, when you probably would not see a real difference in performance or game play. It reaches a point of diminishing returns.

If it ain't broke --don't fix it.

I understand what your saying, and partly expected it .

I was offered 4gb (4 1gb sticks) of ballistix RAM, DDR2 PC2 6400 by this friend for £110!!!, i cant lose anything really, because i can easily sell these on and make a profit (thats what ive decided to do)

Make sure you run each stick through memtest86

Remember as well when you do go to overclock you wont get your FSB higher without the faster ram..And putting 4 1 gigs sticks in will hinder your overclock as well as you wont have any dividers in there..You will still be able to overclock just not as much with the lower rated RAM.
