Default CD/DVD drive only plays DVDs but not CDs
My Inspiron 2650 Laptop will only play DVDs, not CDs, when it is supposed to play DVDs and play/burn CDs. It is old and was given to me with "spyware infections." I was going to use System Commander to erase the harddrive and put a new copy of Windows in it, but the drive won't play my CD. Could this be happening because of Viruses?

Welcome to PCHF

I think this model was released in 2002 so (and taking into account your recent re-format and install) I would start to suspect that the CD laser has gone in the drive.

I didn't re-format it yet, because to do this I would use the system commander CD, and it wouldn't work, and I also tried a DVD and it worked fine.
