Default [Resolved] Hard Drive making bleeping/buzzing sound.

It all started about a month ago. I was watching a video, and my computer started making a beeping and buzzing noise. Kind of like an alarm for somthing but I am not sure. It happened once, for about a second, then stopped.

It's regularity increased, and it happened every time I was watching videos, beaping more and more, for a second, stop... 5 seconds.. stop for 4.. start for 6. Just really annoying. It got to the stage where it was happening more and more often, somtimes when I was just listening to music.

Anyway, my PC kind of died, the HD was corrupted and some vital files were lost, so it died. I formatted and started fresh, and everything was hunky dory till one day it beeped again... for half a second... and didn't happen much again until today. I installed a game and it was doing it during certain parts of the game. I then installed DC++ tonight and it started doing it again.

I have narrowed the sound down to the harddrive, thats where it appears to be coming from.

Does anybody have any idea what it is?

First off, back up all vital data asap. Generally sounds from the hard drive are terminal, and can go rather rapidly and with no warning. So if you have any data on there that is you want to keep, I'd back it up immediately.

Then I find the maker of the hd and visit their website and look for diagnostics, and run the diagnostics there to see if your hd is failing.

Post back and let us know what happens.

thanks,

v

Could it be a problem with the video card?

I don't think it's the video card. usually those errors are signalled during POST (power on self test).

For short term diagnostics you could also try the trial of drivesitter. It will tell you if your drive is overheating and if it's spinning up properly and whatnot. But i have to agree with valis on this one i'd start considering the possibility of having to replace the hard drive. Worst case scenario the problem isn't with your drive and you have some extra (and seperate) storage.

does it make kind of like a grindingsound and have excessive vibration? Valis is right, the harddrive is failing, and quickly to by the sound of it.
