Default Connecting WRT54GS to AOL (UK)

Hi, I'm trying to to do the above for a student of mine: I teach people with disabilities how to use computers. Her ADSL modem is a BT Voyager 190, and I have no idea how to get the Linksys to "see" the modem and the internet connection. All lights are on OK on the modem and, so it seems, the router.

Does anyone know where I can find a straightforward tutorial to help me set this up? I'd really appreciate an answer ASAP as I am with the student at the moment and would like to get this thing running!!

Thanks,

-Jim

Thanks WM:

I'm now back home so there's no real rush. I've had a hell of a time (5 hours) trying to get the router to work, and no joy. The good news is that one of student's neighbours is kindly (and unknowingly) sharing their wireless connection, so my student can use that for the moment.

I'll be seeing my student some time next week, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, so if anyone could offer some advice before then that would be great.

I guess one thing that would really help is if someone could confirm that they have managed to get this make of router connecting to AOL through the BT Voyager 190, because I would then at least know it was possible!

Cheers,

--Jim

This is not actually one of AOL's supported routers so it may be difficult to find an 'easy' tutorial.

To access the router's setup page you will need to open a web browser (preferably IE).

1. Enter the router's IP address this is normally 192.168.1.1 for the linksys above into the address bar.

2. A logon box will appear you will need to leave the username blank and type a password of admin (default).

This will then bring up the router's setup page which may help.

Also you will need to make sure these are the settings entered into the modem:

Connection Protocol: PPPoE
VPI: 0
VCI: 38
Note that sometimes you will be asked for both figures together (VPI/VCI). In that instance, you enter them separated by a comma: 0,38
Username: yourscreenname@aol.com
Password: youraolpassword

MTU: 1450
MRU: 1450
MSS: 1410

The thing that really stood out for me in your post was:

I was entering the username without the "aol.com" at the end. You may have just solved my problem! Thank you so much!

Can I just ask: because this router isn't supported by AOL, does that suggest that it won't work with AOL, whatever I do?

Although I won't be able to see if this works until next week, so if anyone else has any other tricks I could try then please let me know.

Oh right, yep you must make sure you include the '@aol.com' bit otherwise it wont work. I will let you know if i find anything else.

BTW she's got a nice neighbour to give away free wifi!

I've found this to be quite a regular thing in Edinburgh, because most people live in the wonderful flats that were put up here over the last 150 years (if only they'd done that in London it would be a much nicer place )

It's not unknown for people flat-hunting, especially students, to take a PDA or laptop with them to see whether their potential flat has free wireless broadband available
