Default Microphone and USB Troubles!

I got all set to record one of my novels so I could make an audio book of it, but . . . wouldn't you know . . . the mic won't work.

Could this be a sound card issue? A mb issue? Or, me just not knowing what end is up today?

It's plugged in where it's supposed to be. Everything supposedly is "working properly" when I check the device manager. The speakers work fine. I just can't record anymore. My boys sometimes use my computer to play online games, and they say they were able to use team speak which requires a mic, but I can't get it to work for anything now.

I have an ASUS A8V Deluxe Rev. 2.0 motherboard and a Creative Labs Soundblaster Audigy 2 zs sound card. There seems to be two spots where speakers and mics and stuff can be plugged in. There?s one row of spots with all the identifying colors on it for speakers, mic, etc., located right in the area of all the other stuff?keyboard, mouse, USB ports, etc., and another with no identifying colors on it below that. One place is on the mb, and the other is the sound card, have I that right?

Okay, so, the speakers don?t work up there in the green spot where you would expect them to. I plugged them in the other place, and they work fine there, as I said. But the mic won?t work in either place. I got new batteries for one of my mics, thinking that was it, and then bought a new mic you just plug in . . . but . . . nothing.

Now I know the mb failed the unexpected interrupt test when my computer guy ran a diagnostic on it at the time he put this PC together. Would that failed test be to blame for the mic?oh, and the extra USB hub?not working? Except for those two things, I haven?t had any trouble with the computer.

Appreciate any help and advice anyone can offer!

Hi ND

Go to Control Panel => Sounds => Voice tab => have a look at the "default device" for your voice recording. Do you have more than one option in the dropdown box?

Nope, only one option. Just a while ago, the speakers quit. I rebooted and they're okay again. But still no mic.

Ok, did you try the mic in another PC?

Also, did the mic come with drivers?

As it happens, we don't have another working pc in the house. The other two need reformatting, and it appears that the OS disks are either missing or not working for some reason. On top of that, my whole CD case of disks for my computer seems to missing . . . not a good situation here!

No, no drivers came with the mics that I recall. I just plugged them in, and they worked. One is a Labtec and the other is a battery operated USB mic from RadioShack.
