Default Help on buying new pc

Ok I am going to buy a new pc but I want to know some stuff before I do. I have been reading around which way to go. AMD Athlon or Intel? People say they are sticking with Intel but they are both close.

anyways I am buying an intel but im not sure if Celeron is any good. Could you tell me if this is any good for my purchase?

CPU Intel Celeron CPU 3.2 J GHz 351 Socket 775 FSB533 256KB
Memory 1024MB DDR400 PC3200 Memory (Major Brand) (512MB x 2)
Mother Board ASUS P5P800 SE Motherboard
Optical Drive 1
LG 16X DVD RW +- Dual Layer
Video
Onboard Video (verify availability within motherboard)
Audio
Onboard Audio
Network Card Onboard Network Card
Power Supply 400 Watt Power Supply
Warranty
1 Years Parts & 3 Years Labor Warranty

Does that look like a good buy? The cost for this is $342 usd. Sound good? I have a case in here that is good so add $40 for that, but is the rest worth the money?

Hi there Odie,

Welcome to PCHF. May I ask what you are going to be using this computer for? One thing I can tell you right away is that with the video being integrated with the motherboard, that will take away some of your RAM, which may not be a problem depending on what you want to use it for. One thing I do not see is the Hard Drive. How big is it? It looks like it should be a good deal. If you are looking to do some serious gaming, then I would suggest investing in a seperate video card because with it integrated with the motherboard you are going to be limited as far as graphics.

Hey Guys,

@JD, good answer, I was going to say basically the same thing.

@Odie, my welcome to PCHF as well. You seem to have a really good deal there, but I would definitely get an upgraded Vid card. Even if you aren't a big gamer, I think you will notice the difference, (the vid card will have it's own memory built in.)

Let us know what you decide. Look forward to seeing you in the forums.

TTFN

LGW

Ok and what about celeron? Are they any good. I heard they ****, its the cheapo version of intels main chips. Should I go pentium 4 or Athlon 64? Also what is this dual core stuff? Should I go dual core?

Hi again,

Before you decide on a processor, there are a couple things you need to decide on first. The first thing is what are you going to use the computer for. For instance are you going to use it with programs that are going to heavily task the processor or are youjust wanting to connect to the internet. The second thing you need to decide and this is probably the most important, and that is how much are you willing to spend. I will tell you that when it comes to the dual core, they more expensive from what I have seen. Dual core simply means that there are two complete processors either side by side, or stacked on top of each other. I happen to like Pentium 4 processors. They are a good processor. Hope this helps.

1. I am going to use my computer for internet and other tasks. I am not a serious gamer.

2. I am willing to spend $400 but all I want is the cpu. I already have windows and a hd so their are two things nnocked right off the list that puts some money on.

3. I am a multi tasker. I like to switch between programs. I usally have at least 5 programs running constantly :P

Again im not a serious gamer but with flash graphics on websites nowdays maybe it would be good to invest in?

and one last thing. which was should I go?

Pentium 4
Athlon 64

and please give me some feadback on the celeron. I mean if celeron's are good a 3.2 ghz cpu with a gig of ram sounds good for $320

Thanks for the reply,

For your particular case, I would go with the Athlon 64. I am like you. I multitask at work and have lots of programs up and running at the same time, and I have to tell you the Pentium 4 really does not care for it too much. Don't get me wrong, it works, but sluggish at time. Again I would go with the Athlon 64. It sounds like it will work better for you. I hate to say this, but I have never used a Celron processor. Perhaps some other people in here have used them and can provide feedback.

Hope this helps.
