Default Help please, my computer randomly locks up.

I'm having trouble with my computer randomly locking up. I will be using my computer normally, when my computer makes a sort of clicking sound, like when I shut down the computer from windows and the computer shuts itself down. After this sound, my programs all freeze, and no inputs from my mouse or keyboard work. The hard drive access light on my case lights up solid as well. The only thing I can do after this is press the reset button.

Sometimes my computer reboots fine, but usually it has to enter scandisk. The last time this happen, when I rebooted I got a blue screen saying Windows encountered a hardware error and stopped itself from starting. In a paragraph on this screen it mentioned my motherboard was not ACPI compliant or something like this. I have been running this computer for about 2 years and have never had that error.

I have tried reformatting my hard drive. Twice during windows XP. while Windows was scanning my hard drives (I think), I had this problem occur, which leads me to belive this is a hardware error.

Does anyone know what might be wrong with my PC, and any ideas on how to fix it? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to PC Help Forum.

How comfortable are you with opening up your PC and touching/moving components inside the case?

I'm perfectly comfortable with opening up my PC and working with components inside. I build this computer I'm having trouble with, albeit not too well apparently.

Great, start by stripping the PC back to the minimum required components to boot. If you have more than one stick of RAM, try them one at a time and test for lockups. Also, check the temps in your bios...re-seat the CPU heatsink if neccessary (and check the heat compound).

I haven't stripped my computer yet, but I have noticed two things. My Bios is reporting my CPU temp hovering around 60 C, is this alright for an Athlon XP 2500 barton? Also, everytime I reboot, a partition of my Master drive has to be checked for consistency.

Ahhh..ok. Boot into Windows and run a FULL disk check. Double-click "My Computer" > richt click on the hard drive > properties > tools.

60 degrees is higher than it should be at idle. Re-check your heatsink and heat compound.

60 degrees for a Athlon is really not okey. Mine is stretched max. 50 degree, and I only have the normal fan installed. But on the other hand, Athlon crashes only above 75 degrees, so that can't be the reason. Try a memorytest, maybe there lays your problem...
