Default PC Startup / Monitor Output problem

Hi,

I'm putting this in the general section rather then one of the more specific ones as I have no idea what is causing the problem.

While a game was running the machine just switched off and when turned back on the monitor was showing the "no signal" message. Seen this before so pull out the power plug and waited ten minutes before trying to switch it on again but still the same thing. I now notice that when the pc turns on it is constantly trying to read the second dvd drive and the first is being read on and off (flashing ever 2 seconds or so), the red (busy) light is constantly on at the front of the computer. The screen just says that there is no output and the PC does not seem to boot at all (left it for 10 minutes and still in the same position).

I have tried all the connectors inside the case and also gave it a quick dusting. I thought that this might be an issue with the graphics card due to the lack of video output so I swap it for an older one but still nothing. I thought that it might be an issue with the hard disc (thought that it may have been trying to boot from the dvd drives rather then the HD) but I swaped in another and still the same problem. I thought that it might be a power consumption issue so I disconnected both dvd drives but apart from the fact that they were no longer flashing, still nothing.

Anyone have any idea what could be causing the problem?

My Specs are:

AsRock K8-Combo Mother Board
AMD Athlon 64 3400+
2 x 1GB Corsair Ram
Sapphire Radeon X850XT 256MB
Live Blaster Sound Card
400w power
120GB HD (can't recall make)
DVD RW
DVD

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Gavin

hello gavin, welcome to PCHF,

since you've done all the swapping i believe that you have a bad video port on your motherboard. i had this same problem a month ago. the thing i did was take my swap my parts with my roomates and see if any failed. none did on his Mobo. so next thing to do is put all his parts on my Mobo. they didnt start up so i know that was the cause of the problem. If i were you i'd go to a store if your friend doesnt have the same board and buy a new board. if it workes then you know the problem. if it doesnt then take it back and then move to the CPU.
