Question Sony Vaio and USB 2.0 Upgrade

I have a Sony Vaio with a very unusual USB/Firewire port in the front of my computer. It has the Firewire on the left and the two USB's on the left next to each other standing up and down. I just can find this configuration anywhere, but I would really like to upgrade fron USB 1.1 to 2.0. If there any alternatives?

I may be misunderstanding your post, but upgrading from USB 1.1 to 2.0 is I'm afraid not possible. It really is a hardware thing and so not changable except to get new hardware in your PC (in this case laptop). Because you have a laptop I think it's not possible.

Are we talking Sony Vaio PC or laptop? If you have a PC then you can buy a USB 2.0 PCI card that will slot nicely into your PC...and for the laptop you can buy a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card..

Okay, to make clear up my question, I know that I need a USB 2.0 PCI card, but their are no PCI cards that match the 3 port combo that I have in the front of my computer. I don't know whether I must get a matching PCI card for the current configuration of USB slots in the front of my computer, or if I can just take out the card and the plastic plate that is protection the front of it and get a card with a matching coverplate. The ports I have in the front of my computer are a firewire to the left and two USB to the right that are standing up and down, side by side. If Firewire is a "_" and USB is a "|" then the combo I have is _||. Does this make for sense or I am still just confusing?

Hey Bjackerman,

First you need to determine if the current card is a combiniation of the firewire and the USBs or if they are on two separate cards.

Regardless, if you replace the current set up with one of 2.0 that matches it should fit with the current cover.

Can you please post the model number of your Vaio? Thanks,

TTFN

I have a Sony Vaio PCV-RX550 and the PCI in the front part of the tower conaitns both the Firewire and the USB. I would also like to know if I only change the PCI card in the front of my computer, will it still work at the USB 2.0 level.

I just can not find a PCI card that is the same port setup as my current card and was also wondering if I could take off the cover and use a new card? I really don't know much about this whole thing!

 Hey there Bj,

Considering that the USB functionality is mostly if not completely relevant to the hardware, when you replace the PCI card to a 2.0, those usb ports will be running at 2.0, you would also need to replace any other USB ports with 2.0 cards in order for those ports to also run 2.0.

In regard to your back ports, here is a product that definitely works with your system. http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...uct_Id=107412#.

I'm still researching the front card.

I'll post back when I find an answer.
