Default DVD drive missing

Hi
Can someone please help me

My d-drive(cd/dvd) just went missing. It was OK when I last used it few days ago. When I go to my computer, its not there. Checked device manager-also not listed. However, "physical d-drive" is OK - I can put in a disc & the indicator light flashes when I reboot.

Tried to reformat but couldnt get system to boot fr D drive before C. Went into BIOS setup(I have a ASUSP4S800MX motherboard) - under Boot Menu - there is no ATAPI CD rom listed.

I noticed that on reboot - it has msg "Hardware Manager " found error.
Then shows "Detecting - Primary Slave, Secondary Master & Secondary Slave - NONE"

Have check many forums on related issue but no identical problem so far.

I''m on XP home

My A drive is oK.

What's wrong

Hi Pech, Welcome to PCHelpForum!

we have a wonderful team of tech experts who will be more than happy to help you out.

Have you changed the physical setup of your hardware ie. moved the drives around on the IDE Cables at all recently?

Is the DVD Drive alone on the cable?

It vanished, and you haven't got a clue what could possibly cause this?

Default Reconnect

Hi Pech,
Turn the pc off and turn the plug off at the mains ( keep the plug in the wall socket to earth the pc.) open the case and touch the case surround for a couple of seconds to discharge any static you may have.
Try disconnecting the CDROM, take the power lead and IDE cable out of the back of the CD (remember which way the IDE plugs int the drive)
turn the pc back on and go to the BIOS and see that only the hard drive is detected. Turn the pc off and reconnect the CDROM. Start again and check if it is detected in the BIOS again. Unfortunately if it does not pick it up the drive may be faulty and may need to be replaced, sometimes the lights may flash and the drive spin but nothing else is working.
All the best

Radar

Just did as you recommended, the drive is still not detected. Guess the drive must be faulty.

Will get a new drive.
