Alright, I've had my system for over 3 years now and although it's been good, I think it's time to upgrade to an all new one. My computer has a Pentium 4 2.4 processor, 768 MB RDRAM, 120 GB Harddrive, Nvidia Geforce FX 5700LE 256MB graphics card, 17" Dell UltraSharp flat panel display, Sound Blaster audio card, harman/kardon 2 speaker + woofer, 16x DVD drive, 40x CD-RW drive, floppy of course, Dell Media Keyboard, 8 USB ports, 3 Firewire ports, all the other standard connections, and I guess that basically covers it. I've attached an in-depth report if you need to see it. I want to know exactly how much this system is worth. I'm including everything and everything is in 100% working condition and I have all the included system disks and documentation, also in perfect condition. For a home computer, this thing kicks ***. It's 3 years old and it's still better than 90% of the current home computers I've used.

Ok, that's that. Now I want to know if now is a good time to upgrade. Should I be waiting for anything to be released? New Windows OS, maybe? Price drop on hardware? Upgrade in hardware? Anything?

Let me know. Thanks guys.

Oh, also, I didn't look at that log file too much so if there's any personal info in it, please let me know. I wouldn't want to be giving that out.

Hey there roryt2000,

Well in the UK you should be able to get at least ?350 for that system, not sure what the market is like your end of the world.
Plus it is a Dell system so that makes it more 'special'

Maybe someone from the states could give a rough price.

I had a quick look and they were selling refurbished Dell system of a slightly lower spec for around $500 US, so you should be able to get maybe $600 - $700.
Not sure how much these systems are brand new, I would work it on a basis of subtracting around $300 - $400 from the cost price. (subtract 1/4 of the price)

Windows Longhorn still doesn't have a set release date (not that I can find) so wouldn't be any point in waiting for that.
They claim sometime in 2006 - http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/p...get2006PR.mspx

Otherwise I recon you should go ahead with the update, there are always rises and falls in the market so you just need to go ahead and do it.

Are there any known hardware upgrades coming out or any price changes or anything like that? I just absolutely HATE buying something, then seeing something newer come out and/or have the price on what I just bought lower significantly.

Ex. - I bought a 20GB iPod color in August, thinking "oh this just came out like 2 months ago, they're not going to be updating it for a long time", then 2 months later... the iPod video! 10GB more space, video compatibility, a bigger and better screen and all for the same price i payed, not even 2 months ago!

So is anything for sure, announced or even likely to be getting updated soon? By soon I mean this year.

Well remember that Windows Vista is coming out, so if your planning on buying a HD monitor make sure they have that microsoft thing for monitors.
