Default PC starting problem - everything goes black

Hello!

I have a very weird problem with my computer. When I turn it on, it usually starts on loading bios and then goes over to loadig Windows XP Pro, and after a couple og seconds, it goes black, the screen, the mouse, everything "dies"! But the fans continue to go, so I have no indication of a problem with the CPU. I have tried to update the BIOS, installed Windows again, but nothing helps.

When I install Windows, it will usually load then, and restart if I select that. But if I leave it off for an hour after that, it won't start again. Does anybody have an idea what this is all about?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Hans,

Welcome to PCHF. We have a wonderful team of techs here, and I am sure that we can help you to figure out what mysterious problem is causing your difficulties.

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode? (continually tap the F8 key while booting until you get either a beep, or a menu comes up, use your arrow keys to navigate to Safe Mode, and hit Enter)

Did you install anything prior to this happening?
Did this begin happening all of the sudden, or did it gradually get worse?
Have you checked your PC to see if it is getting unreasonably hot?
Have you tried a different PSU?

Have you tried booting up with only the basics, MOBO, CPU, HD connected?

Look forward to your reply,

TTFN

Hi there Hans. Another thing you might like to try (as your registry may be corrupt) is to go to the menu that LGW mentioned above and selcet "Last Known Good Configuration" - this will restore the last registry backup from Windows when it last booted successfully.

Hi again!

Well, there were a lot of qustions, but I'll take the time to answer them all. This all started a long time ago, when my HDD could "fall" out on me when I was working normally in Windows (XP). It turned off, just as the power was missing, and then it would start again "randomly" seconds later, and you heard the disk starting up like when it is booting.

Then when I used my computer when I was home last time (I'm in the army now), it was 1 month ago about, and then it started up, and came to the Windows booting, and everything became black, the screen, the mouse, even the reset button doesen't work. This is what now happens every time I start my computer.

And when I tried to install Windows again, it works, and starts as usual. But if I leave the computer off for 1 hour, it won't boot again. Figure that one!

I have a regular ATI graphics AGP card (128MB), set on 8x. I didn't install anything new on my computer before all this happened. Software or hardware. I don't think it has anything to do with my Windows. I also tried to select the start with last knowngood configuration, and the same thing happened. My brother suggested the PSU, and I tried to switch that, and it behaved a bit different then. When it came to the about same loading point, the screen gave me som white and red stripes on the left and right side, before everything became black, like before. Well, that isn't too hard to understand, because the borrowed PSU was only 70W max. My original was 300W max (Q-tech), and I read som chritics on the net about it, and they all said it was very bad, and that it had broken down for many of them. So I bought a new one on the net, and am waiting for that, and will try that. In the mean time, does anybody understand this problem, because I find it somewhat weird. Thanks in advance!

Hans
