Default PSU or Motherboard ?

Hi everyone.

My system is as follows. AMD XP 2.8 on a Via motherboard, 340watt PSU and 120 GB samsung HD, Radeon 9200 GPU,2x265mb PC 2700 RAM. All about 2 years old excpet HD which is a recent purchase.

Today I bought a new graphics card - GeForce 6600GT and a stick of PC2700 RAM 512mb.

When I added these to the system I had boot problems. All fans came on, motherboard showed a green light, Power and HD light were on permanantly (although no spin up was evident and the light remains on even if I disconnect the HD), no output to monitor and no motherboard bleep.

I was careful to avoid static discharge when installing the items.

When I removed the new card and RAM however the problems sadly remained.

Its been suggested to me that I have probably overloaded the PSU and partially burnt it out, someone else said its likely to be the motherboard.

Im thinking of getting a new case with PSU but I wanted to be sure before I did.

Any insight here would be appreciated.

TIA.

Hi Lantril,

Welcome to PCHF. We have a team of really incredible people on site, and I am sure that we will be able to help you figure this out.

First of all, with your new graphics card, did you make sure to change the BIOS to recognize your new card, and disable your previous?

(OK, I know this sounds silly, but we've all done it,) did you remember to plug your monitor into your new graphics card?

If the answer is yes to the first two, do a check in your BIOS for your VGA settings.

Look forward to your reply,

TTFN

Hi thx for the reply.

The old card wasnt integrated so shouldnt need disabling in BIOS I think. Im not sure how I would get into the BIOS either if theres no bleep from the motherboard.

NP Lantril,

If you had graphics capabilities on your monitor, then something was enabled that needs to be switched to your new vid card.

Now if you've switched out cards, it may have defaulted back to your online graphics, make sure that your monitor is plugged into that before attempting to get into BIOS. Switch the VGA settings to your new card, save your settings and exit BIOS. Turn off the computer. Plug the monitor into your new card and try rebooting.

I'm not sure that the MoBo not beeping is a problem yet. Let's double check the simple things that can go wrong first :cheesy: . Then we can go for the complicated things.

Look forward to your reply,

TTFN

The mb has no built in graphics chip. I've tried getting into the BIOS the way I always have on this machine by interrupting the bootup with f8 but it has no effect.

I tried stripping back to a bare minimun of video card,1 ram stick, keyboard and it still doesnt get past POST.

I've reseated averything several times too.

Hi Lantril,

Have you tried reinstalling your old graphics card?

After that one I am going to have to defer to my more knowledgable teammates as hardware is not my forte'.

I sincerely doubt however that you could have done that much damage without even having booted with this graphics card, I am still betting on it being something simple.

One of our great hardware gurus should be along shortly, hang in there, I know we are going to get you up and running.

Yes, tried reinstalling old card, everything is currently back as it was before I put the new components in.

The problem that arose however does not go away.

I've now tried a bare configuration of just the old graphics card, keyboard, 1 RAM stick with all the drives unplugged. It still wont get past POST.
