Default PC dead-HELP!

Hi everyone, I'm brand new to this site, but it looks like you all know your stuff. I have a PC at home P4 2.8 Ghz that suddenly went dead. The fans all run, but the only other thing that happens is that on start the read light for the hard drive comes on along with the other lights (floppy, cd-roms) The lights on all the drives eventually go off except for the "hard drive" light. It stays on and nothing else happens. No BIOS beep, nothing on the screen. I have disconnected all of the drives and was able to get it booted a couple of days ago, but on reboot this same thing happened. Since then no matter what I do the best I get is the light on the front of the case.

Any suggestions on what to do next? I am worried that it is the motherboard. Hopefully someone can help me here. Thanks in advance.

Hi there and welcome to PCHF

Could be a number of things but (if you can) lets start by checking the Power Supply Unit...is there any way that you can borrow another one to test?

Thanks for the reply. Actually, that was the first thing that I tried. I bought a new supply and installed it. (I've since taken it back) I also swapped the power supply out of this PC into my other working PC and had no problems with it.

UPDATE. . . I have been able to get the PC started up again. Unplugged all the drives except for Hard and Floppy drives. Started to re-install Windows 2000 Professional. So far I can get to formatting the drive and as soon as that is done the system will hard lock. More info on the PC: Pentium 4 2.8GHz 512 MB of Ram 80 Gig hard drive. This has a ASRock GePro M2 Motherboard and 480W power supply. The processor temp is hovering right around 90 Degrees F. Anyone have any other ideas of what to try?

Hey Waldersha,

My welcome to you as well. Have you checked to see if your cooling system is operating properly, your running temp seems awfully high to me. Check the cables on your cooling system, fans or other, and try swapping them out.

Also, had you noticed anything odd going on with the computer prior to this happening? Including, excessive slowdowns, auto reboots, etc.?

Look forward to your reply,

TTFN

Thanks for the welcome. I have been told that the operating temperature is actually pretty low for these? 89 degrees Farenheit is about 31 degree Celcius if I'm figuring correctly. Do you still think that is high?

By the way, nothing really strange happened before this that I can remember. It seemed to be running just fine and then on a reboot this happened. Thanks again for any help or ideas.
