Default CPU not booting, everything powers on but monitor is blank

This just happened last night. When I press the power button, everything turns on but the computer will not boot. The monitor just stays in sleep mode (yellow light does not turn green). It's not the monitor though because I am using it right now on my laptop. The disk drives, fans, lights, and keyboard are all on, but the light on my optical mouse is not. There is a yellow light on the motherboard that is on. It is a Gigabyte GA-7VRXP. It's like everything is powering up but the motherboard is shot or something. Could it be the hard drive also? Please help and I do appreciate it. Thanks.

This is weird, but everytime I touch any key on the keyboard, the system powers up (still not working though).

:-) Hi Helmettt,

Welcome to PCHF. We have some brilliant minds at this site, and I am sure we will be able to help you to solve or at least determine what is causing the problem.

Unfortunately, this is not my area of expertise, but I can think of some information that would be helpful to the guys if you could provide it please.

Remaining PC stats, OS, AV, AnitSpyware, Firewall, and any new software or hardware that you may have installed before this occured.

Any other odd occurances that you may have noticed prior to this problem.

We'll look forward to your reply.

Thanks for the welcome.

AMD 1800 XP, 512 ram, 40 gig Samsung slim hard drive less than year old. Bought it off my younger brother dead about a year ago, just replaced the hard drive and it ran perfectly. I have McAfee virus scan but it recently expired about a month ago, so I have limited protection. I always have the windows firewall running and I run adware and spybot frequently. I have spyware blaster installed and I believe my router (Linksys RT312) has a firewall.

I cannot recall any recent software installs that would have done this. The only thing I can think of is that in the recent several weeks my cpu has done something like this a few times (mouse won't respond and monitor is blank). This does not happen frequently but it never seemed to do it before. I would just reset and it would be fine.

Hope that information is helpful. Please ask if you need more. I am really worried about my hard drive as I use my cpu for everything including running a business. Thanks.

Hey Helmett,

Why not try re-setting the cmos (bios). Look on your motherboard for a small jumper that says cmos reset or something similar. The jumper usually sits on 2 of 3 pins - move the jumper so that it covers the center pin and the pin on the other end of the three. Then move it back to its original position (all with the power cable unplugged). If you can't find the jumper, simply unplug the PC and carefully prise out the bios battery on the motherboard...leave it out for 10-15 seconds and put it and the power back in.

:-) Hi Helmett,

I wouldn't worry too much about the info on your hard drive, even if your motherboard blew, you can still retrieve the data from the hard drive by connecting it to your laptop.

My concern is you having a bug that is keeping you from being able to bootup. But like I said, this isn't my area of expertise, but the guys here that do hardware are amazing.

Thanks for getting back with the info,I am sure everything will be Okay ?

I found the CMOS, but there is no jumper attached. I also noticed that the fan on my video card is not running. And after pulling the video card, trying to reboot, pulling the memory stick, trying to reboot, etc. it seems that the PC will not power using the front button now, I have to use the switch on the power supply. Thanks.
