You have practicly a new pc after replacing all of that , just about the only thing left is the HD i think.
Can you test it with an other HD or test this HD in an other pc?

yes, but why don't i have video or sound? It is integrated motherboard, and i don;t get a POST beep - it does power the keyboard on for a minute but
nothing after that.

i can try the HDD in another system - i'm afraid that the motherboard may be messed up or something - but the one in there is #3.

Yeah it sounds like a motherboard/bios problem but its already youre third , they can't be all broken i guess.

Are you sure everything is hooked up correctly?

Did you also put the placeholders back in between youre motherboard and case?

Try it without the hard drive /cd-rom connected. So disconnect all IDE cables that are currently connected to the board.

Word of warning, don't place the board on top of the anti-static bag, the way the bag works is as follows:

When you place RAM or motherboard or whatever into the antistatic bag, the outside of the bag collects all the static that you currently have therefore when you put the item into the bag it will be static free.

the case has permanent standoffs.

primary IDE goes to HDD (master)

2nd IDE goes to cd1 (master) cd2 (slave)

floppy IDE to floppy drive

PSU to main board 20 pin, 4 pin connector for CPU power connected.

front-side USB, power, and LED cables are color-coded to match slots in motherboard.

****

One other weirdness - the CDROM won't let me open it - it opens and then shuts immediately - like it is busy trying to read it.
this happens on both cdrom drawers, and the led on the cdrom's switch back and forth from cd1 to cd2.

ok this morning i hooked the compaq HDD to my Dell as a slave drive, and downloaded the user files etc. the compaq HDD will not boot. testing it on a win98 system, it said that there was no operating system found; on windows xp, it says that primary 0 cannot be found.

so, the hard drive is screwed as well.

i also tried booting the compaq from a windows XP home edition install disk (not a recovery disk) and it won;t read the cd, and does not display any video signal.

I am going to try to swap motherboards again.... (sigh)
