Can I install Windows 7 on my PC?

Windows 7

Windows 7

You’ve heard the hype, you’ve seen the TV ads and the press reports and you’re sitting there thinking oh yea, Microsoft are at it again. Vista was a disaster, there I said it. It was released too soon without software support and was therefore doomed from the start.

When Vista was released we were all enjoying XP at its most stable and to be fair, right then, in that moment in time XP was good. Good meaning that the previous years of pain, service packs and other drama’s were far behind us and the affinity that we felt for the operating system was more like a comfy pair of slippers, rather than a shiny new ferrari. Enter Vista…

Vista was a power crazed behemoth that consumed massive amounts of system memory (and never gave it back), refused to work with a whole raft of relatively modern hardware and prevented even the most basic of applications from running without some form of hiccup, usually culminating in the user being asked a hundred times if they were really, really sure that they wanted to run the program, via a multitude of popup boxes.

Out with the old and in with the new then. Windows 7 is the beautiful cousin who you remember as an annoying geeky kid - she grew up..and then some! Sure, it may look and sound a bit like Vista and sure, it looks like the Start button will never return, only to be permanently replaced by the glassy globe thing (what the hell do we call that…?). But Vista it ain’t.

Windows 7 has been cunningly re-designed from the bottom up and seamlessly does all of the things you ever wanted your copy of Windows to do and many of the things you never even knew it could. I’m not going to go into detail about all of the cool new gizmo’s, the amazing memory management, or bitlocker or any of the other multitude of “stuff” that Microsoft have crammed into this sweet smelling package, no I’m just going to say that you need it. You need it if you’re running XP and you certainly need it if you are still trudging through the Vista mire.

Use this handy tool to see if your PC, notebook or laptop will run Windows 7 and join the happy, smiling people (no, not the Mac owners this time).
